A degree may be awarded or without honours, with the class of an honours degree usually based on a weighted average mark of the assessed work a candidate has completed. Copperbelt University Intake
The degree classifications are:
- First-class honours (1st)
- Second-class honours, upper division (2:1)
- Second-class honours, lower division (2:2)
- Third-class honours (3rd)
- Ordinary degree (pass)
Classification of Degree
The degree of Bachelor of Science shall be classified as distinction, merit, credit or pass. In calculating the grade of degrees the following shall be applied for the grades obtained in the 3rd and 4th year of study:

In calculating the grade of degree, the following shall be applied;
Average Score Per Course | Grade of Degree |
3.5 | Distinction |
2.5 | Merit |
1.5 | Credit |
0 | Pass |
Computation for the purposes of the classification of the degree shall be based on the number of courses in the programme. The following example shall be the basis of computation.

Assessment
The assessment shall consist of continuous assessment and a written examination each with a weighting of 50%. Continuous assessment in each course which shall be weighted 50% shall consist of all prescribed components of coursework such as tests and assignments. The final written examinations shall carry 50%. A pass mark in each course, Teaching Practice, and the Research Project shall be a mark of 50% or better. Candidates may apply to repeat the failed courses.
