Founded in 2008, Lusaka Apex Medical University (LAMU) is Zambia’s first-ever privately owned Medical University. Its main aim is to contribute to the resolution of human resource for the health crisis faced in Zambia and the Southern African Region by increasing the output of critical and essential trained health staff.

The establishment of this university will go a long way in the realisation of the Zambian Health Sector’s National vision of providing equitable access to quality health care and ultimately improving the health status of all Zambians.

This is especially critical in Zambia, where the production of essential trained health staff has not matched the corresponding increase in the burden of disease including HIV/AIDS. There is, therefore, great need to increase the number of health training institutions as set out in the policies of the Ministry of Health. As the Zambian public health sector operates with roughly 50% of the workforce required to deliver basic health services, and among the lowest densities of professional health workers in southern Africa. The current ratio is one doctor for every 17,589 people – far below the WHO-recommended ratio of 1:5,000. There is a similar shortage of nurses, clinical officers, midwives, pharmacists, nutritionists, and laboratory personnel. At the facility level, shortages are most acute in rural health centres (RHCs), where the average vacancy rate among clinical posts is 71.5%, compared with 29% in urban health centres and 52% in hospitals.

To ensure access to basic health services, Zambia must enlarge and more efficiently utilise its health workforce. Against this backdrop, it is clear that Lusaka Apex Medical University is poised to contribute to the production of human resource for health in Zambia and the region.

Through its strategic partnerships, LAMU has already demonstrated its capacity to enhance the transformative power of teaching and learning through the use of developments of technologies and techniques in the medical

and health field globally. It brings inefficiencies associated with the private sector.

The University is registered with Patents and Companies Registration Agency (PACRA) Zambia; with the Ministry of Education in accordance with the provisions of Higher Education Act of 2013 of the Laws of Zambia; and accredited and recognized by the Health Professional Council of Zambia, and the General Nursing Council, Zambia.
