Below are Copperbelt University School of Medicine Programmes Offered
The MCS SoM has three departments, namely: Clinical sciences, Basic sciences and dental sciences; offering four undergraduate programs: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Science in Clinical Medicine (BSc CM) and postgraduate programs: Master of Science, Master of Medicine and Doctor of Science.
Undergraduate programs
Students to be enrolled into the five-years MBChB and DBS programs and the four-years BSC CM program will be from the BSc Non-Quota of the School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Students and Copperbelt University after one year; or students with A levels. Students with O levels will have successfully completed year 1 at the MCS SoM to undertake the programs. Direct entry students will be those with BSc in Natural Sciences with Biology and Chemistry majors.
At the end of the MBChB/DBS/BSc CM programs, students will have acquired the following competencies: and be able to work as medical/dental doctors or clinical officers upon successful completion of their programs.
- Patient Care. Provide care of patients for the common medical and surgical/dental emergencies as well as most of the common non-emergency conditions.
- Clinical Practice. To practice at the level of a junior house officer under the supervision of a consultant in the major medical and surgical fields/dentistry in a third level hospital.
- Communication and ITC Skills. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills as well as show the ability to use ITC skills in health care provision that result in information exchange and partnering with patients, their familiarize and professional associates.
- Practice-based Learning and Improvement. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continuous self-assessment, using scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve one’s patient care practice.
- Professionalism. Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to diversity. In addition, to potentially specialize in the fields of clinical medicine/dentistry and related fields.
- Systems-Based Practice. Understand how to practice quality health care/oral health and advocate for patients within the context of the health care system.
- Community Health Care and Health Promotion. The students should understand the community health needs, the Zambian health system and be able to be involved in health promotion and community health care schemes.
Post Graduate Programs
The MCS SoM offers two types of Postgraduate training programs. These programs are the following;
- Clinical Master degrees
- Research Degrees
Clinical Masters Degrees
These are postgraduate Master of Medicine degrees of 4-year duration for Medical Doctors. These training programs are hospital-based and are designed to produce a clinical specialist who will attain the position of a hospital consultant in the health system.
The school has currently 3 postgraduate accredited programs by the Health Profession Council of Zambia and these programs are:
- Master of Medicine in General surgery M.Med(GS)
- Master of Medicine in Urology M.Med (Uro)
- Master of Medicine in Obstetrics and Gynaecology M.Med(Obs)
