Environmental Engineering  Department Copperbelt University Intake

The Environmental Engineering Department was established in 2010 in response to the growing concern over increased environmental degradation in Zambia and globally. The Department evolved from the Chemical Engineering Department, which like the Environmental Engineering Department, operates under the School of Mines and Mineral Sciences. Entry Requirements

In the case of Zambia, population increase and economic growth have lead to increased pressure on the environment and its resources, leading to an exponential increase in air, land and water pollution emanating from various economic and industrial activities in the country; of major concern has been Zambia’s extractive and manufacturing industries which significantly impacts on water quality, air quality and land.

The nations need for fully qualified Environmental Engineers and Technologists who are able to use and apply scientific and engineering principles in life and industrial processes in order to reduce environmental degradation cannot be overemphasized, especially as Zambia aspires to strengthen its economy through a sustainable development approach.

Copperbelt University Environmental Engineering Objectives

  1. To apply scientific and engineering principles in life in order to improve and protect the environment.
  2. To promote environmental protection and conservation of finite environmental resources (to provide clean water, clean air, and usable land for human habitation and for the survival of other organisms).
  3. To encourage sustainably use raw materials for various industrial processes.
  4. To promote the use of environmental friendly technologies and processes in various industries for the production of goods and services.
  5. To promote the use of environmental friendly sources of energy for domestic and industrial purposes.
  6. To promote the safe disposal of waste in its three forms (solid waste, gaseous emissions & liquid effluents).
  7. To provide an understanding of the legal and legislative regimes that govern our main source of raw materials, energy and resources (the environment).

The programmes offered in the department are:

  • Master in philosophy (M.phil) in Environmental Engineering
  • Master in Science (MSc) in Environmental Engineering, Monitoring and Management
  • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) in Environmental Engineering
  • Diploma (Dip) in Environmental Technology
