Below are the admission requirements for certificates, diploma, bachelor degree, and masters courses offered at Busitema University.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) & Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNS)
Duration of MBChB is 5 years and BNS is 4 years.

Admissions

Students are admitted to these two programs in four ways:

(i) Direct Entry Scheme

Eligibility;

a) Should have an “O” Level certificate (with atleast 5 passes)

b) Should also have: Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with at least two (2) principal passes in prescribed subjects obtained at the same sitting. The prescribed subjects include: Biology and Chemistry (Weight 3)Physics, Mathematics and also Food and Nutrition (Weight 2), General paper, Subsidiary Mathematics (Weight 1), any other subject (Weight 0.5).

c) Fulfill other admission requirements that are determined by the University Admissions Board from time to time.

ii) Diploma Holders Entry Scheme

Eligibilty;

a) At least a credit diploma in a health discipline from a recognized Institution

b) Fulfill other admission requirements that will be determined by the University Admissions Board from time to time

c) Candidates are given a pre-entry examination, which is then used to select the best candidates.  About 40% of new admissions come through this system

iii) Degree Holders’ Scheme

Eligibility:

a) A Bachelors’ Degree in a biological science or health related discipline from a recognized institution.

b) Cumulative grade point average of at least 2.80 for the undergraduate degree under consideration.

c) Fulfillment of other admission requirements that are determined from time to time by the University Admissions Board.

d) The CGPA is used to rank the applicants

e) Four (4) slots are normally reserved for this category of applicants of which two go to female applicants when available.

iv) Mature Age Entry

A candidate must sit and pass the mature age exams set and marked by the University. The candidate must be at least 25 years of age. This scheme is yet to be operationalized.

Master’s in Public Health

Duration of this program is 2 years.

Eligibility:

a) A degree in a health sciences e.g. MBChB, BSc. Nursing, B.Pharmacy, BDS, BSc. Physiotherapy and BVM

b) A degree in biological sciences e.g. Biology, Laboratory sciences, Nutrition

c) A degree in social sciences e.g. Social work, sociology, economics, demography and statistics

d) Selection of students for admission only follows an advertisement run widely in the national print media.

 Masters in Internal Medicine

Duration of the program is 3 years

Eligibilty:

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or its equivalent from a recognized institution.

Busitema University Graduate Admission Requirements for 2024

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at Busitema University, applicants must satisfy the minimum requirements below:

  • The process of admission of prospective graduate (Postgraduate Diploma, Masters, and PhD) students shall commence with application by the prospective students.
  • It shall be the responsibility of the applicant to pay the application fee, complete the application form, and provide copies of the relevant academic documents to the Office of the Academic Registrar and the Directorate of Graduate Studies.
  • The duly completed application forms shall be scrutinized by the Office of the Academic Registrar, and the Directorate of Graduate Studies in consultation with the line departments where the graduate programme is offered.
  • The decision to admit an applicant shall be based upon the recommendation from the line department communicated by the Dean or Director of the Faculty or Institute in which the department is based.
  • The recommendation from the line department shall be based on the assessment of more than one member of staff of the department. Furthermore, at least one of the staff members shall be actively involved in the research.
  • The suitability of an applicant to pursue a graduate programme shall also be based on the two confidential references submitted to the Office of the Academic Registrar.
  • An applicant already enrolled with another university or Busitema University shall not be admitted for a graduate Programme at Busitema University.
  • The applicant shall show evidence that s/he has secured adequate funds to enable her/him to pursue the programme s/he has applied for.
Busitema University Masters Admission Requirements for 2024

Any prospective Master’s student is expected to fulfil the following requirements:

  • An applicant shall be required to have obtained a good Bachelor’s Degree, at least at the level of Second Class Honors Degree or its equivalent in the relevant field, and from a University or any other recognized institution.
  • An Applicant who meets the above criteria and has missing basic core courses in the field of interest shall be required to undertake a bridge set of courses to scale up to the basic core requirements.
  • An applicant who is a holder of a Third Class/Pass degree or its equivalent may be admitted only after providing evidence of academic growth and maturity in the desired field of study as judged by the Board of Graduate Studies.
  • Other specific requirements shall vary from programme to programme.
Busitema University PhD Admission Requirements for 2024

For prospective Ph.D. candidates, the following requirements are expected:

  • In the case of a Doctoral research programme, the admission shall be based on the quality of the Bachelor’s degree and possession of a Master Degree in the relevant field of interest.
  • An applicant who possesses a Pass degree shall NOT be admitted for doctoral research programmes.    (b) In exceptional cases, the admission of an applicant who does not possess a Master Degree shall be based on the quality of the Bachelor’s degree only.
  • In addition to the academic qualifications, the applicant shall have a viable research concept duly endorsed by the prospective supervisor and the head of the department.
  • The prospective supervisor(s) shall express their willingness to supervise such a candidate in writing to the Research and Higher Degrees Committee.
  • During the course of the academic year, a PhD student should develop a comprehensive research proposal with the help of his supervisor(s) and other senior members of the academic staff in the relevant fields of study.
  • The respective Research and Higher degrees’ committees of Boards of Faculties on advice from the host Department shall confirm at least two supervisors for each student (See Section 5.3 and 9.3)
  • The DGSRI shall, on the recommendation of the Faculty Research and Higher Degrees Committees, appoint one or more supervisors to advise a candidate whose subject of special study or research has been approved, and the candidate shall be required to work in close association with the supervisors.
  • When a Research proposal of a PhD student is found satisfactory by the Faculty Higher Degrees and Research Committee after defending, a recommendation is sent to the DGSRI Board for action. Thereafter, the student shall be granted a full registration as Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree student of Busitema
