In 1925, The Government agreed to start regular classes in the Old Boys High School (Prince Edward School) and the first Advisory Council was appointed. In 1926 The Salisbury Technical School opened in the Caledonian-hall with Mr Richard Deary as the first Principal. In 1936, Mr Challoner led a deputation to Sir Ernest Guest to appeal to Government for a permanent site to establish an Institution. A site between Fourth and Fifth Street was acquired and the Polytechnic was completed just before the Second World War. With the post-war boom these buildings soon become inadequate.

In 1936, the Commerce Department and some of the Workshops staff moved into the Old Selbourne School in Prince Edward Street. Harare Polytechnic’s academic prowess in technical and vocational education leaves a lot be desired. Its expansion drive have seen the Institution offering a wide range of courses ranging from Short Courses, National Certificate up to Higher National Diploma in the various disciplines but is however geared for elevating its training into offering more Bachelor of Technology Degrees.

In addition to B-Tech Programme in Chemical Engineering which is still operational the Institution has already leap frogged and ventured into other degrees programmes in Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Pharmacy Technology and Mass Communication. The outright ambition and projection being to transform itself into a Degree awarding Polytechnic.
