Prof. Thomas Ekamais Akuja is a holder of a B.Sc (Agriculture) and M.Sc (Agronomy) from the University of Nairobi. His PhD was obtained from the prestigious Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Beer Sheva, Israel. For a period spanning 33 years, he has been involved in the fields of household food security, emergency response, livelihood baseline studies and surveys, early warning systems, participatory community training, corporate governance, research and lecturing, in particular, he got to understand the traditional/pastoral land tenure and management systems.

He has participated in numerous international conferences. He started off working on anthropological works in his home County of Turkana. This gave him practical insight into the rural and cultural settings of the poverty-stricken and disadvantaged groups in society. In particular, he got to understand the traditional/pastoral land tenure and management systems. He has over 50 publications in refereed journals and has participated in numerous international conferences.

As a consultant, he has been working for various CBOs, FBOs, NGOs and UN agencies. Prof. Akuja has undertaken project evaluation, training, needs and problem assessments for Child Fund (CF), World Vision International (WVI), Oxfam-GB, SNV-Netherlands, Practical Action (ITDG), Arid Lands Resource Management Project (ARLMP), Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD), UNDP, USAID-FEWS NET, Africa Harvest Biotech International, UNICEF/OLS and UN-WFP.

Prof. Thomas Ekamais AKUJA is currently the Principle of Turkana University College. He has won numerous awards in the field of Agriculture and food security.
