Each programme offered at UEW  has specific requirements that prospective students are required to meet to guarantee their chance of gaining admission.

UEW Admission Requirements for Diploma Degree Courses

1.WASSCE/SSSCE Certificate Holders 

Applicant must have Credit passes (A1-D7) in Three (3) Core Subjects comprising English Language and Mathematics, and (A1-C6) in Three (3) Elective Subjects relevant to the programme of interest.

Except Diploma in Education where an Applicant must Possess at least a Diploma or Hind in a specific area f Study

2. SSSCE/ ABCE/GBCE Holders

Applicants must have Credits passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects, comprising of three (3) main Core Subjects, which are; English Language, Mathematics and Science /Social Studies and three (3) Elective Subjects important to the programme of interest.

3. MATURE APPLICANTS

  • Applicants  must be at least, 25 years before the tie of application.
  • Applicants should have a minimum of GCE/SSSCE/ WASSCE/ DBS or RSA certificate.
  • Applicants  must pass  General Aptitude Test (GAT) and Subject Area Test (SAT) to be organized by the University.
BACHELORS

1. WASSCE Holders

  • Applicants Must have at least, six (6) WASSCE Credit passes (A1-C6) comprising of three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Electives in important subjects with the total aggregate of 36 or better.
  • Applicants Must also satisfy Special Programme requirement(s) for programme(s) chosen.

2. School Certificate/GCE Holders

  • Five (5) credits at GCE “O” Level, comprising of English Language and Mathematics as well as two (2) “A” Level passes other than General Paper in relevant subjects.

3. Diploma Holders

  • Applicant must possess a College Diploma or Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
UEW Distance Education Programmes Admission Requirements

Diploma in Basic Education

Applicants must possess any one of the following:

WASSCE Holders

Applicant must have obtained Credit Passes (A1-D7) in three (3) Core Subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies and (A1-C6) in three (3) Elective Subjects relevant to the programme of interest.

SSSCE Holders

Applicant must have obtained Credits Passes (A-D) in Six (6) subjects, comprising of  three (3) Core Subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and Science and Three (3) Elective Subjects relevant to the programme of interest.

Diploma in Early Grade Education

Applicants must possess any one  of the following:

  • WASSCE with passes (A1 –D7) in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics & Integrated Science/Social Studies plus credits (A1 – C6) in any three (3) elective subjects.
  • SSSCE with Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising of three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics & Integrated Science/Social Studies plus any three (3) elective subjects.
  • Mature applicants must be 25 years or above (Refer to Mature Applicants for more details).
Diploma in Education 
  • Applicants must possess any one of the following:
  • A bachelor’s degree in any relevant field of study.
  • A tertiary Diploma or a Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent from any accredited tertiary institution
  • An Advanced/Part III Certificate in a trade subject.

NOTE:

This programme is by Direct Entry only. Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) qualification alone cannot be used for admission into this programme.

UEW Admission Requirements for Bachelor Degree Courses
Bachelor of Education in Basic Education (Upper Primary Option )

Applicants must possess any one of the following:

  • WASSCE with Credits (A1 – C6) in six (6)subjects including three (3)Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science/Social Studies, as well as three (3)Elective subjects.
  • SSSCE with Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects.
  • Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above.

NOTE:

Diploma in Basic Education (DBE) certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at Level 300 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 2 years)

Tertiary Diploma certificate Holders (other than the DBE certificate) from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at level 200 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 3 years). Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

Bachelor of Education in Basic Education (Junior High School Option)

The entry requirements are the same as that of Bachelor of Education in Basic Education programme (Upper Primary Option).

Bachelor of Education in Basic Education (Early Grade Option)

The UEW entry requirements are the same as that of requirements for the 4-Year Bachelor of Education in Basic Education programme (Upper Primary Option).

Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at Level 300 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 2 years)

Tertiary Diploma certificate Holders (other than the DECE certificate) from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at level 200 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 3 years). Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

Bachelor of Arts in English language Education

a) WASSCE Candidates

Must possess Credits (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects comprising of three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits (A1 – C6) in three (3) elective subjects including Literature-in-English.

Tertiary Diploma certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution, with at least a credit grade in Literature-in-English at SSSCE or WASSCE, will be exempted from writing mature entrance examination. Such applicants will be placed at Level 100 of the 4-Year programme. Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

Must be 25 years or above.

b) SSSCE Candidates

Must possess Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising of three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits (A – D) in three (3) elective subjects including Literature-in-English.

c) Tertiary Diploma certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution, with at least a credit grade in Literature-in-English at SSSCE or WASSCE, will be exempted from writing mature entrance examination. Such applicants will be placed at Level 100 of the 4-Year programme. Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details)

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Education 

a) WASSCE Candidates

Must possess Credits (A1–C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, plus
Credits (A1 – C6) in three (3) elective subjects including Elective Mathematics.

b) SSSCE Candidates

Must possess Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising of three core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, plus Credits (A – D) in three (3) elective subjects (in General Science or Business) including Elective Mathematics with the total aggregate of 24 or better.

c) Tertiary Diploma certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution, with at least a credit grade in Elective Mathematics at SSSCE or WASSCE, will be exempted from writing mature entrance examination. Such applicants will be placed at Level 100 of the 4-Year programme. Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

d) Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details)

Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education

a) WASSCE Holders

Must have six (6) Credits (A1 – C6) comprising four (4) Core Subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated ScienceandSocial Studies plus Credits (A1-C6) in anytwo (2)of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, History, Government, and CRS/IRS.

b) SSSCE Candidates

Must havesix (6)Credits (A – D) comprisingfour (4)Core Subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies and Credits (A-D) in any two (2) of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, History, Government, and CRS/IRS.

c) Tertiary Diploma certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution, with at least credit in any two (2) of the following electives: Geography, Economics, History, Government at SSSCE or WASSCE, will be exempted from writing mature entrance examination. Such applicants will be placed at Level 100 of the 4-Year programme. Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

d) Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details).

Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Studies

a) WASSCE Candidates

Candidate must have Credits insix (6)subjects comprisingthree (3)core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Science/Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits in any other three (3) relevant elective subjects (i.e. Business Management, Financial Accounting, Elective mathematics, Cost Accounting, Economics, and Business Mathematics).

b) SSSCE Candidates

Candidate must have Credits insix (6)subjects comprisingthree (3)core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Science/Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits (A-D) in any two (2) of the following: Business Management, Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, and Business Mathematics), plus A credit pass (A-D) in one of any of the following: Elective Mathematics and Economics.

c) Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘item 2’ under ‘Definition of Terms’ for details).

d) Diploma Holders

Holders ofDiploma in Accounting Studiesfrom the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized University will be placed at level 300 of the programme.

Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) in Accountancy from any recognised tertiary institution with at least 2nd Class Lower will also be placed at level 300 of the programme

Tertiary Diploma certificate Holders (other than those mentioned in (i) and (ii) above) from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at level 100 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 4 years)

NOTE:

Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) qualification alone cannot be used for admission into this programme.

Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource MGT

WASSCE with Credits (A1 – C6) in six (6)subjects including three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects with the total aggregate of 36 or better

SSSCE with Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising of three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects with the total aggregate of 24 or better.

Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details). Diploma Holders (Post Diploma applicants)

Holders of Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Education, Winneba or its equivalent from any recognized University will be placed at level 300 of the programme.

Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) from any recognised tertiary institution in any of the following programmes: Human Resource Management, Secretaryship and Management, Accountancy, Marketing, Purchasing & Supply with at least 2nd Class Lower will also be placed at level 300 of the programme

Tertiary Diploma certificate Holders (other than those mentioned in (iv) and (v) above) from any recognised tertiary institution will be placed at level 200 of the programme (i.e. they will pursue the programme for 3 years).

NB: Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) qualification alone cannot be used for admission into this programme

Bachelor of Arts in Social Studies Education

a) WASSCE Holders

Must have six (6) Credits (A1 – C6) comprising of four (4) Core Subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies plus Credits (A1-C6) in any two (2)of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, History, Government, and CRS/IRS.

b) SSSCE Candidates

Must have six (6)Credits (A – D) comprising of four (4)Core Subjects: English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies and Credits (A-D) in any two (2) of the following elective subjects: Geography, Economics, History, Government, and CRS/IRS.

c) Tertiary Diploma certificate holders from any recognised tertiary institution, with at least credit in any two (2) of the following electives: Geography, Economics, History, Government at SSSCE or WASSCE, will be exempted from writing mature entrance examination. Such applicants will be placed at Level 100 of the 4-Year programme. Please note that this does not include Diploma in Business Studies (DBS) holders.

d) Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details).

Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Studies

a) WASSCE Candidates

Candidate must have Credits in six (6)subjects comprising of three (3)core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Science/Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits in any other three (3) relevant elective subjects (i.e. Business Management, Financial Accounting, Elective mathematics, Cost Accounting, Economics, and Business Mathematics).

b) SSSCE Candidates

Candidate must have Credits in six (6)subjects comprising of three (3)core subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Science/Integrated Science OR Social Studies, plus Credits (A-D) in any two (2) of the following: Business Management, Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, and Business Mathematics), plus A credit pass (A-D) in one of any of the following: Elective Mathematics and Economics.

Bachelor of Business Administration in Human Resource MGT

WASSCE with Credits (A1 – C6) in six (6)subjects including three (3)Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects with the total aggregate of 36 or better SSSCE with Credits (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising of three (3) Core Subjects: English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science or Social Studies, as well as three (3) Elective subjects with the total aggregate of 24 or better.

Mature Applicants: Must be 25 years or above (Refer to ‘Definition of Terms’ for details). Diploma Holders (Post Diploma applicants)

Holders of Diploma in Management Studies from the University of Education, Winneba or its equivalent from any recognized University will be placed at level 300 of the programme.

UEW Postgraduate Regular/Fulltime Entry Requirements

PH.D (REGULAR MODE)

Applicant should possess Researched Master’s Degree in the relevant field of study from an accredited institution, with Cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 3.0 in the course work and at least grade “B” in the thesis/dissertation.

ONE YEAR M.PHIL. TOP UP PROGRAMMES (REGULAR MODE)

Candidate must possess a Master of Education/Master of Arts/Master of Science, with GPA of not less than 3.0, in the relevant field of study from any university recognized by GTEC.

NOTE:

Departmental/Programme specific requirements may apply.

TWO YEARS M.PHIL. PROGRAMMES (REGULAR MODE)

Candidate must possess a first degree with at least Second Lower Class Division in the relevant field of study from any recognised university.

NOTE:

Departmental specific requirements may apply.

UEW Postgraduate Sandwich Entry Requirements

M.A PROGRAMMES

a) Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division), with Education component (e.g. B.Ed.), or without Education component (e.g. B.A., B.Sc.) from the University of Education, Winneba or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study.

b) Applicants with third (3rd) class division in their respective first degrees would be required to pass an entrance examination and admission selection interview.

M.SC. Programmes 

Candidates seeking for admission into the programme must have earned a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in any discipline with at least 2nd Class Lower Division. Or Applicants with third (3rd) class division may be considered for admission on the grounds of substantial working/professional experience and shall pass an entrance examination and an interview.

M.SC. In Development Finance 

Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution. Or Applicants with third (3rd) class division may be considered for admission on the grounds of substantial working/professional experience.

NOTE:

This programme is available for both Sandwich and Weekend (Part-time) Mode for one (1) academic year, in which students must complete their dissertation.

M.ED. Programmes 

Applicants must:

Possess a first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana in the relevant field.

NOTE:

a) Applicants with a second class division (2nd Class Lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than Education are required to obtain a Diploma in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.

Applicants with third (3rd) class division or pass in their respective first degrees with or without education component would be required to pass an entrance examination and admission selection interview.

NOTE:

The duration of M.Ed., M.A. and M.Sc. programmes that are run on sandwich mode is one (1) sandwich year, that is, two (2) sessions, within which students are expected to complete writing of dissertation. Fees are paid per each session.

MBA Programmes (Weekend mode)

Candidate seeking Admission into any MBA programme must:

(i) Have obtained a good first degree with at least a Second Class Division in the related field or programme of study from a recognised University. Or

(ii) Applicants with third class degree with a minimum of 5 years working experience in related field of study can also apply. Such applicants must pass the University’s entrance examination and the admission selection interview. Or

(iii) Be a qualified member of one of the following professional bodies constituting the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) e.g. ACCA, ICAG, CIMA and ICAEW.

In addition to any one of the requirement in (a) above, the applicant must have at least one year relevant experience in the private or public sector.

NOTE:

MBA programmes are run Weekend (Part-time) Mode for two (2) academic years, in which students must complete their dissertation.

M.A Programmes (Regular and Weekend Mode)

Applicants who seek admission into a Master of Arts programme in the School Communication and Media Studies must have Bachelor’s Degree from any discipline, and should have obtained a class not below Second Class Lower division.

NOTE:

Applicants who obtain a GPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A coursework and are desirous of pursuing the M.Phil. in the field of study are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition to a one (1) year Top-Up. M.A. in Communication and Media Studies programmes are run on both regular and weekend mode for one (1) academic year, in which students must complete their dissertation.

M.SC. In Development Finance (Weekend Mode )

Applicants must have a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower Division) in any academic discipline from a recognised institution. Or Applicants with third (3rd) class division may be considered for admission on the grounds of substantial working/professional experience.

NOTE:

Post-Graduate Diploma in Teaching &Learning in Higher Education (PGDTLHE) – Weekend Mode

To qualify for this programme, the applicant should be a;

  •  Beginning lecturer in any recognized tertiary institution who has no formal qualifications in teaching in Higher Education. Or
  •  Master’s / Doctorate degree holder who wishes to pursue academic career as a teacher in tertiary institutions.
  •  Applicants with Master’s Degree must posses at least Second Class Lower Division in the undergraduate programme from any institution accredited by the GTEC

NOTE:

This is a postgraduate programme run on weekend basis at the University of Education, Winneba.

M.A. Communication and Media Studies Programmes (Regular and Weekend Mode)

Applicants who seek admission into a Master of Arts programme in the School of Communication Media Studies and the School of Creative Arts must have a bachelor’s degree from relevant discipline and should have obtained a class not below Second Class Lower division

NOTE:

Applicants who obtained a CGPA of 3.0 or better at the M.A course work and are desirous of pursuing the M. phil in the field of study are given the opportunity to apply internally for consideration and transition to a One Year Top-Up

Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Distance Mode)

Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in any field of study.

NOTE:

This programme is run for one (1) academic year, in which students must complete their dissertation.

Master of Education Programmes run by Codel – Distance Mode

Applicants should possess a good Bachelor’s Degree, with education component, in the relevant field of study from a recognised University.

Applicants with B.A. or B.Sc. degree without education component must have a Post Graduate Diploma in Education or Diploma in Education in addition.

NOTE: Subject specific requirements may apply

Master of Education Programmes by ITECPD – Distance Mode

Applicants must possess one of the following:

A first degree with education component from a recognized University in the subject specific area and should have taught for at least two years.

A first degree in a subject specific area plus postgraduate diploma/certificate in education.

NOTE:

These Programmes are designed to train graduate teachers who will serve as Mentors, Administrators, Counselling Psychologists and Leaders in Educational Administration and Management. They are of One (1) Year duration.
