is always under scrutiny with regard to its relevance to the ever dynamic society. Hence, we are aware of the need to continually review programmes and curricula in order to keep abreast with national, regional and global demands. Modern veterinary education also needs to move towards a more student-centered education which encourages self-learning and problem-solving. Previously career opportunities in Zimbabwe and most of the region were mostly in the government veterinary services and public universities but currently many veterinarians have to start their own businesses or work in other fields such as the pharmaceutical and commercial livestock industry. Additional knowledge and skills on aspects such as animal welfare, communication, professional ethics, entrepreneurship, management and leadership have been introduced into the curricula. A good professional should also have awareness of the need for lifelong learning. The faculty with the guidance of the profession and other stakeholders is always striving to come up with tailor-made continuous professional development (CPD) modules. The faculty is involved in research and innovation targeted at the development of human resources that can effectively transform animal health, welfare and productivity in the region.

To be a centre of excellence with close regional and international collaborative links on training, research and innovations in animal health, welfare and production which contributes towards the enhancement of human health and life on a sustainable basis.
Mission
The Faculty aims to provide undergraduate, postgraduate and continuous professional veterinary training of an international standard. The strategy is to offer excellent clinical and life-skills training which allows prompt disease recognition in animals (including wildlife) under different management systems and implementation of adequate control measures for the benefit of the agricultural economy and the society at large.

Entry requirements and duration
BVSc: It is a full-time five-year degree programme. “A’ level passes in Biology & Chemistry is compulsory plus at least one other science subject (Mathematics and/or Physics) and a point system is used. ‘O’ level English Language and Mathematics are also a requirement.
DVN: It is a full-time two-year degree programme and the entry requirements are 5 “O” level passes inclusive of Mathematics, Biology & English Language
MSc/MVSc/MPhil/DPhil: For the Masters Degree programmes, it is 2 years and 3 years for full-time and part-time students, respectively and first degree with a 2.1 or better in the relevant area of study is a requirement. For the DPhil programme, it is 4 years for full-time and 8 years for part-time students and a Masters degree is a requirement.
REGULATIONS FOR BVSc
It is governed by the General Academic Regulations for undergraduate programmes of the University of Zimbabwe and Faculty regulations. The courses are not semesterised. Candidates must pass every course in a part before proceeding to the next level. A student who fails a course may be allowed to sit for supplementary examinations. A compulsory certified 3-month extra-mural practical at a veterinary establishment for every student as from Year 3 is required.
