BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (ARTS)
Rationale
The Bachelor of Education (Arts) Programme is designed to prepare teachers and Educators within the teacher training prescriptions of the Ministry of Education and the Secondary School system in Kenya. The BEd programme is run on an integrated basis where the professional and academic contents are offered concurrently as determined by the country’s Teacher Training Component (TTC). In addition to Foundation Courses in Education, students will be expected to choose two other subjects that are offered in the service departments. These subjects must correspond to the curriculum offered in Secondary Schools and other equivalent institutions in Kenya‟s Education system. In order to design a balanced curriculum to accommodate the professional and academic requirements, courses from ten (10) subject areas provide flexible subject combination. The departments are:-
Psychology, Counselling and Educational Foundations
Curriculum, Instruction and Educational Management
Literature Language and Linguistics
History Philosophy and Religion
Programme Objectives
i) The Curriculum for the BEd (Arts) Programme is designed to provide adequate opportunities in both theory and practice of Education in order to train and produce qualified graduate teachers/Educators for the achievement of the national goals of Education and development.
ii) The Programme will prepare students:
(a) for an active and excellent career in all facets of the profession of Education;
(b) to be active and competent in teaching two subjects at the secondary school level;
(c) to be able to identify and develop the intellectual needs of the learner;
(d) To gain the intellectual, professional and social characteristics that will enable them to become responsible leaders within the school and the community;
(e) to contribute meaningfully to the national goals of Education and development;
(f) to conduct training and carry out research in Education and in their areas of specialization and
(g) for further Education and training in their areas of interest and specialization.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must satisfy the minimum entrance requirements of the university. In addition candidates must have attained the minimum grades as specified by various departments from time to time. In addition, admission may be granted to outstanding holder of Diploma/S1 Certificate in Arts Education from recognized institutions.
Course Structure and Duration
The Bachelor of Education (Arts) programme (BEd Arts) takes a period of four academic years. Each year consists of two semesters of seventeen (17) weeks each. In addition, the students shall take twelve (12) weeks of School Practice in approved secondary schools or equivalent institutions. During School Practice, the students shall carry out a Project on production of a Teaching/Learning Resource in one of their teaching subjects. Students are expected to take subject combinations, which are composed of:
i) University common core Courses as approved by Senate
ii) Foundation Courses in Education.
iii) Select two teaching subjects from the following subject areas:-
a) Geography
b) Economics
c) History and Government
d) Religious Education
e) English
f) Kiswahili
g) Mathematics
h) Business Studies
i) Literature in English
j) Computer Studies
Courses are identified through a four letter and three digit system.
i) The first digit denotes the year the Course is offered.
ii) The second digit denotes the category of the Course unit.
iii) The third digit denotes the sequence of the Course unit in a particular academic year.
The programme utilizes course codes from the respective service departments.
Examination Regulations
All examinations for Bachelor of Arts shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Grading System
The grading of examination for this programme shall be conducted in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.
Degree Classification
Degree classification for Bachelor of Arts shall be in accordance with examination regulations as stipulated in the Egerton University Statute XXVIII.
