University of Nairobi Graduate School Programs
Regular or full time undergraduate international students: The University of Nairobi recognizes the London GCE, ‘A’ level qualifications or their equivalents; International Baccalaureate, any final secondary/high school examination deemed equivalent to the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education as recognized by the Kenya National Examinations Council or any internationally recognized examination body. The minimum University entrance requirements are set out in the University of Nairobi Statute XXI. Subject requirements for each Faculty/School/Institute are set out under the appropriate section of the University calendar and details can be obtained from the Academic Registrar.
Any international student who wishes to have his secondary/high school academic certificate equated by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) should get in touch with CIPL for guidance or visit the KNEC website: www.examscouncil.or.ke to access the guidelines. Please note that KNEC will only equate certificates where a method (formula) for conversion exists and where the curriculum followed is known to KNEC. KNEC charges a nominal fee for this service.
Admission for degree programmes is done in January, May and September every year. Application forms for all first degree programmes may be obtained from the Academic Registrar, University of Nairobi, and P.O. Box 30197-00100, NAIROBI. Email: reg-academic@uonbi.ac.ke . Application for admission to higher degree programmes can be achieved by downloading application forms from the Board of Post Graduate Studies homepage or by email enquiry: graduateschool@uonbi.ac.ke Enquiries relating to specific programmes may also be obtained from the Dean or Chairperson.
Exchange, occasional or research associate students: Foreign students from other universities can be admitted for less than a year in any of the categories indicated. Students intending to be admitted in any of these categories must submit the following: 1) expression of interest, 2) reference letter from either the dean, chairperson or a professor, and 3) academic transcript. Students admitted for more than a semester in specific modules will be examined and can transfer the credits obtained to their institutions. All foreign students seeking admission at the University of Nairobi should send enquiry to the Director Centre for International Programmes and Links, email: international@uonbi.ac.ke
Postgraduate students: Masters and doctoral programmes are offered in almost all the programmes studied at the undergraduate level. Foreign students intending to enrol for postgraduate studies should get in touch with academic departments, faculties/institutes or the Board of Postgraduate Studies. A Master’s degree is usually by course work and research whereas doctoral degrees are conducted by research.
Details of specific master’s and doctorate degree programmes can be obtained from the university website. Students in this category pay fees as stipulated in the guidelines. Students intending to apply for this programme should get in touch with the specific department at least six months before admission.
N.B: Fees payable by foreign students vary depending on the degree course. The fees are payable in US dollars equivalent to the Kenya shilling amount and subject to the prevailing exchange rate. Exact fees payable for each respective degree course can be obtained from the Academic Registrar or from our website: www.uonbi.ac.ke .
